On 26 May, Rosto Solidário organised a beach clean-up at Monte Branco Beach, on the Ria de Aveiro in Torreira, with the support of the Municipality of Murtosa and the participation of 25 volunteers.

The initiative brought together 7 Rosto Solidário volunteers and 18 invited volunteers from the Portuguese Red Cross in Oliveira de Azeméis and Cucujães, resulting in the collection of around 30 bags of waste.

Beyond its direct impact on environmental preservation, the initiative highlighted the importance of collaborative work and active citizenship.

Beach and natural area clean-ups are becoming increasingly important in response to environmental challenges associated with pollution, particularly plastic and microplastic waste.

Removing this waste contributes to biodiversity conservation, public health protection and the appreciation of local areas. At the same time, these actions help protect essential natural resources and reinforce the idea that public spaces are a shared responsibility.

European Solidarity Corps (ESC) volunteers play a particularly important role in this type of initiative. Their participation mobilises young people and citizens committed to social, environmental and community causes, promoting values such as solidarity, collective responsibility and civic participation.

In addition to their immediate environmental impact, these activities also have an important educational and community dimension. When associations, volunteers and local organisations come together, they strengthen the sense of belonging and shared responsibility for the environment.

This is a concrete example of how volunteering and community action can encourage behavioural change, strengthen environmental awareness and promote more active civic participation, contributing to more responsible and sustainable communities.
